Man- Animal conflict on rise in Poonch- Rajouri
Leopards enter populated villages , Bakerwal family attacked

At least four members of a Bakerwal (Nomads) family were critically injured in border district Rajouri when a group of leopards entered their house and attacked on them . However, the family fought back bravely and managed to escape from the clutches of leopards . The injured were laterifted to Rajouri hospital where the doctors told condition of two critical . One of the leopards have been trapped by the officials of wild life while rest of the group reportedly melted to the forest .

Giving details, sources said, a group of leopards attacked at the house of one Haji Mohammad Bashir in village Bindi in Rajouri district in the wee hours of Wednesday morning and critically injured four family members . “ It was about 6 am today morning when I saw a group of leopards heading towards my house, as i raised an alarm one of them attacked on me . On hearing my cries and screams all the family members came out and tried to save me but they all were also bitten by the leopard . Mean while, large number of villagers and our neighbours raised cries due to which the leopards left us and fled towards forest”, said Haji Mohammad Bashir . His three sons also got critically injured in scuffle with the leopard . Sources said, one of the leopard was still in the village and wild life officials have laid a cordon around him and there was no progress to nab the leopard till the last reports came in .

This is not the first incident of such type , large number of such incidents have taken place in Poonch and Rajouri border region during the past couple of months . However, the man – animal conflict took an alarmingape following the recent snow fall on the higher reaches of the border region which forced the maximum wild life to migrate towards populated areas . The population neighbouring forest areas is severally terrorised and have no option to save their lives . On the other hand , the police is also help less to provide any security to the people because of the consequences of any loss to the wild life . A senior police officer told this correspondent that they (Police) can not do any thing because there are strict laws in favour of wild life . “And we can not kill any leopard till not declared man eater and before taking any action against the man eater leopard we have to obtainoot order from the magistrate”, he said

On being contacted , forest Minister Mian Altaf Ahmed said that a team of wild life officials have been despatched to the spot to nab the leopard trapped in the area . Mian Altaf Ahmed also said that the victims will also be given financial aid as per the provision .
