| Gujjars meet Guv, demand Gojri research centre in JU | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, February 25 – A DEPUTATION of the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation , called on the Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, at Raj Bhavan, here today and presented a memorandum of their demands. The five-member delegation of cultural activists was led by the Dr. Javaid Rahi, Secretary of Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation -a frontal organisation of Gujjars. The demands projected by the deputation, interalia, included opening of a full fledged “Gojri Research Centre” in University of Jammu which stand already approved by University Council along with teaching staff since 2008. The delegation apprised that the opening Gojri Research centre will help in preservation of tribal arts, culture, tradition, language, customs and trdation in an organised manner and will benefit of the Gujjars and Bakarwals at larger scale. Another demand pressed was establishment of a “ National Tribal University” in Pir Panchal belt of J&K State. The delegation apprised the Governor that the Tribals constitute more than 25% population of Jammu and Kashmir State and Gujjars comprise 85% of the ST communities” and with “setting up of a tribal university exclusively for promoting avenues for higher education and research facilities for the tribal population will defiantly trim down the feeling of discriminations among various tribal groups”. Other demands projected including, inclusion of Gojri language into the Eight Schedule of Indian Constitutions is still pending with centre Government. The demand of raising of a full-fledged ‘Gujjar-Regiment’ in Indian Army on the Pattern of ‘Jat’, ‘Raput’ and Dogra Regiments since 1947 was also projected during the meeting in addition to establishment of Gujjar scouts on the pattern of Ladakh scouts . They also demanded telecast of Gojri programme and news bulletins from Doordarshan Kendras of Jammu and Srinagar. The Governor, after giving a patient hearing to the deputation, assured that he would take up their demands with the Chief Minister, for early decisions. The members of the delegation included Ch. Roshan Din, Ch. Zabeer Ahmed Bajad, Arif Sajjad and Riaz Mehmood Chowdhary.
