JAMMU, Feb 25: At least 10 government employees received injuries in police cane change when nearly 2000 employees made an abortive bid to ‘gherao’ the State Legislature complex here this afternoon.

The protesting employees from different government departments and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) on the call of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC)-an amalgam of about 37 government employees unions-gathered at Eidgah near Residency Road demanding issuance of formal orders for resolution of all their already agreed upon demands including release of arrears of Sixth Pay Commission panel.

Meanwhile, condemning water canon and cane charge on protesting employees, Joint Consultative Committee has announced five days long pen down strike from March 9, if the demands of employees are not fulfilled.

The agitated employees led by JCC convenor, Abdul Qayoom Wani marched towards the Civil Secretariat complex. They were stopped by heavy contingent of State Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Shalamar Chowk which led to scuffle between them.

While the district administration had imposed Section 144 CrPC in and around the State Legislature complex, the rally was taken out in complete of violation of government orders.

Shouting slogans like, “Omar Teri Sarkar Mein, Bache Bhukhe Marte Hain……., Omar Teri Sarkar Mein, Lathi Danda Chalta Hai” .., (children remain empty stomach in Omar’s regime and employees are facing cane charge),” “Humari Maangey Puri Karo …. (Accept our demands) etc, the agitating employees forcefully tried to move towards the Civil Secretariat complex which was resisted by a strong group of CRPF and State Police.

With agitating employees remained undeterred by the water canons used by police, the latter resorted to mild cane charge. About 10 employees sustained minor injuries in police action, said reports. However, the high pitched drama continued for about one hour disrupting the normal traffic on ever busy chowk.

Later, about 200 employees courted their arrest in protest against the State Government’s alleged failure to fulfill their demands.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Jammu-Kathua range, Farooq Khan, who was present on the spot, informed “The employees violated the Section 144 CrPc imposed by the administration and they were courted arrest in violation of official orders.”

The JCC had earlier given the call to ‘gherao’ the Legislative Assembly in support of their demands including release of arrears of the Sixth Pay Commission, enhancement of retirement conversion of Cost of Living Allowance to Daily Allowance in favour of employees of Pubic Sector Undertakings (PSUs), regularisation of all daily, contractual, adhoc and consolidated employees, removal of pay anomalies of all cadres and enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 years.

Meanwhile, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh All Department Clerical Staff Association has condemned the police action on protesting employees and extended full support to the five days strike call of JCC from March 9.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Sukhbir Singh Sudan, Ravi Kumar, Anil Mehta, Brijesh Mehra and Anoop Sharma.
