Akhnoor, Feb 26: In a bid to take the national campaign on Amla to villages in Akhnoor, Govt. Degree College Akhnoor facilitated awareness programmes in College and surrounding villages here today.
The College organized an awareness lecture on Amla (Emblica officianalis), a native Indian plant of great medicinal value, by inviting a team of Doctors from J&K State Medicinal Plants Board, Jammu. Dr. Waheed and Dr. Nuzhat working on the project “National Campaign on Promotion of Amla in J&K” under The Directorate of Indian System of Medicine made the students and youth at college aware about the uses and cultivation of Amla. They put on show a number of benefits of Amla ranging from a liver tonic, to a powerful anti-aging agent and from a rich source of vitamin C that controls bleeding gums to improving various body systems including the immune system of HIV/AIDS patients as well as lowering cholesterol, hypertension, cardiac disorders, diabetes etc. They also distributed pamphlets and Amla candies.
Later the team along with Principal and staff of Botany and Zoology Departments of GDC Akhnoor visited nearby village Palwan where they demonstrated the whole process of Amla plantation and the campaign to the farmers and locals. Prof. (Rtd.) K.C. Bhagat, who was also present on the occasion, made the farmers aware about the cultivation of Amla in local language. Despite their tight labour schedule, a large number of farmers, youth and elders along with village sarpench attended this awareness program.
