EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 27:
Asserting that Congress had emerged stronger in the state, PCC president and former union minister, Prof Saifudin Soz today asked the party cadres to gear up for the upcoming municipal and panchayat elections.
Addressing a mammoth gathering at Kathua, he said by fulfilling the promises made to the people during elections and focussing on people-friendly programmes, the party had emerged stronger in the state.
Soz asked the Congress workers to further strengthen the party by apprising the common masses of the party programmes and policies designed for their welfare.
He said since the municipal and panchayat elections were going to be held in the state in near future, the party workers ought to gear up themselves to ensure the victory of their candidates. The PCC president, however, emphasised the need for promoting only those candidates, who had a proven track record and whose
mission was to serve people with sincerity.
To contest these forthcoming elections, the coalition partners (NC and Congress) would soon evolve a common strategy that would benefit the two parties, he added. He said only Congress had the capability and policies to make the country stronger and take it on the path of progress and prosperity.
The Congress had proved that it had the strength, vision and able leadership to take the nation to new heights of development, he added.
"All our policies and programmes are aimed at the welfare of all sections of our pluralistic society," he said and added, "Congress is an instrument of service to the people." Soz said UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had described politics as another name for service to the people.
He reminded the people that Congress had best served the people of the country for the last 125 years of its
foundation. He said secularism was the back bone of the strength of our nation and people should shun the politics of hatred and divisiveness in the interest of the unity and integrity of the nation.
He said the country was marching ahead on the path of development under the dynamic leadership of Sonia Gandhi and able prime ministership of Manmohan Singh.
He also opined that Rahul Gandhi was firmly moving on the path of uniting and winning the hearts of all sections of the society, especially the youth of the country.
While Choudhary Sardar Khan joined Congress along with thousands of his supporters, Pankaj Dogra returned to the party fold.
BJP councillor Balraj and prominent social worker Bhagwan Dass Khajuria also joined the party on the occasion. The PCC president welcomed them into the party fold and hoped that more and more people would join Congress in the days to come because of its policies and programmes.Several senior party leaders attended the function.
