EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 27: District Information Officer, Poonch, Mohammad Akbar was manhandled by a crowd at Mandi in Poonch today for his fault of listing "good works" done by the government in the area. He represented the Poonch district administration in a function held at Mandi in the afternoon.Official sources said various people, who spoke on the occasion, criticised the government and the Poonch district administration for their failure to provide basic amenities to the people. Trouble, however, started when, in his address, Akbar started listing "good works" done by the government and the district administration in Mandi and other Poonch areas. While he gave a resume of the welfare schemes for the people, he was roughed up by some people and manhandled. The situation was, however, saved from worsening further by the timely intervention of police, the sources added. Sources said Akbar was later taken to the Mandi police station under police protection. He also had a meeting with tehsildar, Mandi, in the evening on this issue. When contacted, police said as it was a minor issue, no FIR was registered in the case.
