| Minister, MLA behind Pattan sectarian clashes | | | Early times report Jammu, Feb 28 : The state Government has reports indicating that the recent sectarian clashes in the Pattan area of Kashmir has been the result of long drawn feud between one Minister and one PDP MLA. Official sources said that two communities have clashed over the sharing of irrigation water and both the Minister and the PDP MLA have been allegedly supporting their supporters to secure more water from the irrigation canals so that their crops did not suffer. According to the official reports, the PDP MLA had been annoyed with the Minister who had been instrumental in the defeat of the religious leader in Assembly by- election from Pattan when the Minister supported the candidature of Dr Mustafa Kamal, brother of Dr Farooq Abdullah. These reports said that had not the minister supported Dr Kamal he would not have defeated the religious leader who had won the Assembly election from Pattan constituency in 1983, 1996 and 2002. Official sources said that the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, had been apprised of this development and he would discuss the matter with his ministerial colleague. But Omar Abdullah may not venture to discuss the matter with the PDP legislator as that may further provoke the PDP leaders who have been leaving no stone untuned while measuring swords with the National Conference leadership. Apart from the NC and the Congress leaders, even some of the opposition members have resented the strategy adopted by the PDP in disrupting the Assembly proceedings. One MLA said that because of the ruckus kicked up by the PDP members lot of time of the House had been wasted during the last three days. He said that most of the important questions listed for each day were not taken up for discussion because of the pandemonium raised by the PDP and occasionally by the BJP. The MLA appealed to the PDP members, especially to the leader of the opposition,Ms Mehbooba Mufti,to play the role of the constructive opposition party and generate an atmosphere which was conducive for healthy discussion and debate.
