| Holi celebrated with fervour | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu , Feb 28: Holi, the festival of colours, was celebrated in the City of Temples with streets and city roads getting coloured in all hues. People applied 'gulal' on each other to exchange Holi greetings and sweets among friends and relatives. Youth and children were excited on the festival, which symbolises the victory of ''Bhakt Prahlad (son of Harinyakashyap)'' over his aunt ''Holika''. With their faces covered in multi-colours, groups of youth were seen riding on motorcycles to meet their friends and celebrating the occasion. Groups of children were also witnessed throwing water balloons and colours on the passers-by from the roofs of their houses. Being it a holiday, majority of passenger vehicles (mini buses) remained off the roads. Helmets were not seen and three persons riding on a single motor bike was a common sight. The youths targeted passersby also. Armed with water balloons, they aimed at cyclists, and pedestrians. Even those travelling in cars and buses were not spared. Immaculate clothes were no consideration as they poured water The shopkeepers too had made special arrangements for the occasion. They could be seen selling eggs and colours. Most young girls, however, celebrated the festival with their family and close friends. They opted to remain in the four-walls of their houses to avoid the "indecent behaviour" of boys. Kanu, a college student, said that she preferred to stay at home on Holi as boys on roads always looked for an opportunity to misbehave with them. The newly-wed couples were the main targets of their friends on Holi. Their friends sprinkled them with wet and greasy colours. Besides, security personnel deployed in the state also celebrated Holi at their respective places of postings. The day passed off peacefully. ''No untoward incident was reported from any corner,'' a police control room official said. City police had launched a special drive against the hooligans to ensure peaceful celebrations. In many other states, including Delhi, the festival will be celebrated tomorrow. |
