| Over 650 political leaders, activists killed in J&K by ultras | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 28: In the two-decade long militant history of the state, over 650 political leaders and activists have been killed by militants across the state. Official sources said militants killed in the past 20 years at least 50 senior political leaders and over 600 political activists, besides 352 government officials, 10 members of judiciary and an equal number of journalists. The slain political leaders included militant-turned-politicians, Kukka Parray and Javed Ahmad Shah. Javed, who was made MLC by National Conference, had also started his own newspaper. He was killed months after the PDP-Congress coalition government was formed in the state. A judge of Poonch and his friend were shot dead by militants near Rajouri four years or so back. Over 25 foreign nationals had also been killed by militants in Kashmir, the sources added. Sources observed that there had been a decrease in such attacks in the recent times. The decrease in militant attacks on political leaders and activists was mainly because of the betterment in security situation, the sources added. Sources said four political leaders of the ruling National Conference were killed in 2009, while five political activists were killed in 2008 of which one each belonged to NC, Congress and Awami National Conference (ANC), besides two were from the Peoples Democratic party (PDP).
