| Of 1 cr people visting J-K in 2009,82 lakh are Vaishno Devi pilgrims | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Feb 28: Of the over one crore record tourists and pilgrims visiting the trouble-torn state last year, 82.35 lakh were the Vaishno Devi pilgrims.
Apart from the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, other Hindu cave shrines in the state also witnessed an increase in footfalls.With the aim to attract more domestic and foreign tourists,
the state government has already declared 2010 as "Visit Kashmir Paradise Awaits" year.
Official sources said more than 1.03 cr tourists and pilgrims visited the state in 2009. Among them, 96.84 lakh were "pilgrim tourists" and 6.80 lakh foreign and domestic tourists, the sources added.
Sources said a record 82.35 lakh pilgrims visited the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, 3.47 lakh visited cave shrine of Amarnath, and 7.2 lakh pilgrims visited the Shiv Khori cave shrine. While two lakh visited Shahadra Sharief, 1.5 visited Nagali Sahib, the sources added.
Similarly, 6.01 lakh foreign and domestic pilgrims and 79,000 foreign and domestic pilgrims visited Kashmir and Ladakh regions respectively.
In 2008, 87 lakh tourists and pilgrims had visited Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said the state government had launched a pro-active awareness campaigns across the country to promote
J&K as a safe tourist destination.
Besides this, logistics for adventure tourism were being taken care of. Nineteen tourist development authorities and 50 tourist villages were being set up to cater to the needs of
travellers.
Infrastructure improvement at the destinations as well as development of tourist circuits and tourist villages at a cost of Rs 297 crore were being funded by the Centre, the sources
added.
Sources said the infrastructure building programmes would have a tangible impact in improvising and developing a huge tourism related infrastructure throughout the state with special
emphasis on exploitation of new potential destinations.
