| Scared director rushes to Delhi for lobbying | | DD’s multi crore scam | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 28: The central bureau of investigation (CBI) investigation in Srinagar Doordarshan’s multi crore scam has given sleepless nights to the director and other officials. To save himself from the CBI noose which tightens around his neck with every passing day, the director has rushed to New Delhi to do the necessary lobbying.
The CBI, according to sources, is in the process of recording the statements of the artists, scriptwriters and producers.
Sources revealed that the CBI sleuths have managed to lay their hands on vital evidence suggesting payment of kickbacks to the tune of crores of rupees. “Evidence of payment against fictitious banners has also been found”, they said.
The sleuths, it has been reliably learnt are surprised to know about hefty payments made against blank tapes. “Some of the tapes submitted by private producers against which payment has been released are missing”, the sources said.
The CBI is believed to have been told by insiders that the Doordarshan had been releasing payment to a few editors of local dailies to keep them in `good humour’
The other beneficiaries include house-wives, poultry farmers and vegetable venders.
Surprisingly the Doordarshan has not paid the genuine producers who have been making quality programmes for the past few years. The outstanding is to the tune of Rs 7 crores. “If Doordarshan has no money to pay us, where from does the money for vegetable venders and poultry farmers come?” a disgruntled producer asked.
The CBI investigation has been welcomed by the Mass Communication and Journalism degree holders. Accusing the authorities of encouraging mediocrity they said banners owned by them had always been ignored. “We are trained and could improve the quality of prgrammes if given a chance. But unfortunately we have no money to grease the palms of the authorities”, they said.
