| Adequate measures taken for exporting fruits: Sham | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 1: The Government has taken various initiatives for exporting different kinds of fruits to neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Afganistan and Iran via Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Road, as per the resolution adopted by J&K Legislative Council on 3rd October 2005. This was stated by Minister for Horticulture, Sham Lal, while replying to a question by Abdul Gani Vakil today in Legislative Council. The Minister said the Government of India has brought Jammu and Kashmir State under Agri Export Zone Scheme. He said two Agri Export Zones of apple and walnut have been sanctioned by the Centre, which will promote export of these fruits, adding that the thrust markets for apples are Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Gulf countries. He said Germany, Egypt, UK, France, Italy and other far Eastern countries are the thrust markets for walnut. The Minister said that 169010.401 MTS of fruits have been exported from 2005-06 to 2008-09. He said during the current financial year 2769.054 MTS of fruits have been exported, involving a cost of Rs. 44.77 crore. Giving details of increase of fruit production and its quality to compete in global markets, Sham Lal said that focused thrust is being paid on creation of irrigation facilities by way of digging bore wells, shallow wells, construction of water storage and harvesting tanks besides creation of micro irrigation facilities in all orchard areas of the State. He said three terminal markets at Sopore, Parimpora in Kashmir and Narwal in Jammu are functional, besides eight satellite markets in Kashmir and 7 in Jammu are near completion. He said two cold stores, one at Narwal and another at Parimpora, with 2000 MT capacity are being established, adding that one CA store with 5200/MT capacity has been got established at Lasipora, Pulwama where from quality apples as Harshana brand are exported. He said one cold store facility is being provided to growers at Lawrence Road, Delhi through J&K Agro Industries Ltd.
