| Long term plan on anvil to cater water shortage in Jammu: Jora | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 1: Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora has said that the Government is framing a long term plan for supply of drinking water by harvesting surface water, ground water and rain water, besides utilizing river Chinab waters, for catering to the water requirement of Jammu city and its adjoining areas. He said that various other options are also being explored to address the shortage of drinking water in the city. This was stated by the Minister, while replying to a question by B R Kundal in Legislative Council today. He said at present the average duration of daily water supply in Jammu city is, approximately one and half hours which needs to be enhanced further. Giving details of the expenditure utilized on the improvement of drinking water supply in Jammu city, the Minister informed the House that Rs.25928.37 lakh have been expended from the year 1996-97 till date, under non-plan and plan schemes under the sector. In reply to another question by Mohammad Amin Bhat, Jora said that the Government has formulated a project report of Rs.4.45 crore for augmentation of water supply scheme at Firdosbad-Jalalabad and submitted the proposal to the Centre for funding. He said that under National Rural Drinking Water Programme, 10 more dug wells would be constructed in Jammu to improve the drinking water facility. The Minister said that Economic Reconstruction Agency and PHE Department are also going to dig two deep tube wells in the area which will supplement the short fall of portable drinking water in the said areas after their completion. The Minister while replying to another question by Showkat Hussain Ganaie said that Mujmarg in Shopian district comes under the scope of WSS Awnura, costing Rs.2.54 crore against which Rs.57.54 lakh was incurred upto ending March 2009. He said during current financial year Rs.35.11 lakh has been released on its execution and the scheme is expected to be completed during the next financial year. He said till then the Mujmarg area would be provided water facility from WSS Baginder Babapora.
