| 250 kg poppy straw seized at Lakhanpur | | | Early times Report JAMMU, Mar 1: In their special drive against smugglers and tax evaders, sleuths of excise department today seized 250 kilograms of poppy straw from a truck at Lakhanpur. Official sources said a truck (HP-72/0865) was put to physical verification at the Lakhanpur toll post while it was on its way from Chhatragam in Budgam, Kashmir, to Bhatinda in Punjab. During checking, the sleuths of excise department recovered six bags of poppy straw concealed beneath battens. Sources said the seized contraband and the vehicle were handed over to Inspector Excise, sub-range, Kathua, for action under NDPS Act. The truck driver, whom sources identified as Mohammad Hanief of Shahadra Sharief, was also taken into custody. Deputy Excise Commis-sioner Bashir Ahmed Saraf has appreciated the commendable role of the staff and warned smugglers and tax evaders of stern action if they did not desist from such kind of illegal activities. On February 20, excise department had seized 1,000 kg poppy straw from a truck.
