| Police acquire new guns to deactivate stone pelters | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 1: To counter stone pelting effectively, the police have acquired sophisticated guns that will `deactivate’ the stone pelter for fifteen minutes or so to ensure his arrest. According to informed sources, the police have acquired sophisticated guns to fight stone pelting. The gun, sources said, does not fire bullets. “But when its trigger is pulled, a light beam hits the target and deactivates it for quite some time.” The sources, however, could not say whether the newly acquired gun fires laser beams. The guns have been acquired recently and have not been put to use till date. The guns acquired by the state police are somehow similar to the ones used for `Target Shooting Game’ in the developed world. A target shooting apparatus has the mechanism to generate a beam of light having a wavelength generally visible to the human eye. As soon as the beam hits the target, it deactivates it for some time. The new gun, sources believe, will not cause any injury to the target. “The target will be deactivated without causing any physical harm to him.” The gun, expected to break the determination of the stone pelters may be put to use shortly. Stone pelting has been giving sleep less nights to the authorities for the past two years. The authorities have tried everything ranging from Hadith (Sayings of Prophet Muhammad) to stringent laws to curb stone pelting. Last year the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah sought advise from the British experts. It is believed that the experts from Britian passed on some `valuable’ tips to the state police. However, much to the dismay of the authorities, the stone pelting continues unabated. Stone pelting has triggered a heated debate in the civil society. Seminars have been held and hundreds of articles in support and against the phenomenon have been written during the past two years. The Bar Association has openly supported the stone pelters. The stone pelting, however, evoked massive condemnation following killing of an infant last week in Baramulla. During the past two months, clashes between stone pelters and police have left 225 persons including 75 police men wounded across Kashmir. The phenomenon has been discussed in the legislative assembly as well. |
