| BJP, JKNPP MLAs corner govt over farmers' issue | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 1: The Jammu based members of BJP, Panthers Party and independent MLA Ashwani Kumar took on the Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir in Legislative Assembly today for what they alleged anti farmer policies of the coalition government having ruined the farming community and drought affected people in the state.Echoeing concern, the members raised anti government slogans and created noisy scenes in the House before staging walkout from the House. Even as the Assembly witnessed comparative calm and conduct of smooth business today, BJP members who were up in arms over the farmers related issue raised the matter forcefully as a result of which uproarious scenes continued for few minutes during the question hour. The issue erupted when BJP member Jugal Kishore in his question alleged that seeds and fertilizers were being provided to the farmers in time.He also alleged that over 70 percent crops got damaged due to drought in Kandi areas of Jammu region as a result of which farmers and people in general were suffering. When Jugal talked about the matter of compensation alleging affected farmers were not paid nor was the assessment of damage done properly by the concerned officers, all other members of the party joined this cry and came down heavily upon the government for this ‘lapse’. The members also sought region wise details of fertilizers distributed by the government. While the concerned minister tried to give a detailed reply, the agitating members dismissed it outright contending they were not satisfied with it. However, the Agriculture Minister, while admitting there were many complaints of substandard quality of fertilizers in supply assured that a committee has already been set up to probe into the matter. The members of BJP and Panthers Party got infuriated particularly when the Minister observed it was not a free for all system in distribution of relief and compensation and only those families that were affected were entitled for this. The protesting members huddled themselves in the front row and raising slogans they even tried to enter the well of the House. The concern of the members was also shared by MY Tarigami of CPM. The BJP members staged walkout in protest even as GH Mir assured that there were adequate stocks of fertilizers in the State adding that he will take steps to further streamline the distribution to ensure that the farmers do not face any problem. Giving details about the fertilizer stocks in Jammu, he said that one rack of Urea reached Jammu on Feb 26, as per the assurances given in the House, adding that one more rack was expected to arrive here in, next the two days. He also said that two racks of Urea stocks have been reserved for meeting emergency requirements. The Minister also apprised the House about the measures taken for effective implementation of the National Crop Insurance Scheme launched in the State in the year 2004. He said that the Insurance Companies, which were earlier operating from Jallandhar, have been asked to create infrastructure in the State at district level adding that J&K Bank has been asked to provide them accommodation at its establishments.
