Jammu, Mar 2: Abhimanyu Sharma of GGM Science College clinched the long distance race gold completing the 10,000 meters distance in 41 minutes on the inaugural day of the three-day XXXVII Inter-College Annual Athletics Meet of University of Jammu which got underway at University of Jammu tracks, here today.
The second place in long distance race went to Rakesh Kumar of Post Graduate Departments of JU clocking in 41.12 minutes while third place bagged by Chaman Lal of Degree College Udhampur, who crossed the finish line in 41.39 minutes.
As many as eight events of field and track in both men and women sections were decided on the opening day.
The inaugural day was dominated by the PG Departments winning four of the eight events.
Being organised by Department of Sports and Physical Education, as part of its annual activities, the competitions were declared open by the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu, Prof Y R Malhotra, who was chief guest
He was accompanied by Vice-Chancellor of the hosts University of Jammu, Prof Varun Sahni and Registrar of JU, Dr P S Pathania. Earlier, the chief guest and other distinguished gathering was welcomed by the Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau, who also presented a brief note of JU’s achievements in sports.
The opening function was marked by the cultural programme by the students and flag hoisting ceremony.
Prominent among others present were Prof B P S Sehgal, Prof Rajive Gupta, Dr Meenakshi Kilam, Prof Lokesh Verma as also Principals of participating colleges.
