| Violent students smash JU's administrative block | | |
Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 2: Demanding reduction in their syllabuses for the upcoming final examinations, students of different city colleges today smashed up the administrative block of Jammu University (JU) and violently broke other things that came their way. At least 100 students of different city colleges gathered outside the MAM PG College at about 11 am and held a strong demonstration in support of their demand. They also beat up a minibus driver outside the college, besides causing damage to its window panes. After protesting there for few minutes, they marched towards the nearby JU campus holding stones and brandishing lathies. When they were about 100 ft from the JU entrance, the giant gates were closed on them by the campus guards. The gates were tied with a huge iron chain. As there were no police personnel to stop them or scare them away, the agiated students broke the chain after hectic efforts and entered the campus amidst raising of slogans against JU and its vice-chancellor.The guards, who manned the gates, were roughed up by the agitated students, who later ran towards the administrative block, about 200 ft from the entrance, and smashed the huge glass doors, window panes, half-a-dozen chairs, two tables, a costly inverter, a fan, flower pots and several other things that came their way. Five to six of them were taken into custody by police which arrived at the scene very late. The pieces of the broken glass and furniture lay scattered on the floor and outside the administrative block. All doors of the offices in the block were immediately closed by the staff to stop them from entering there. While leaving the spot, the students also caused damage to a wooden enclosure carved out of an open space inside the block for the JU telephone exchange. Taking strong note of the incident, JU vice-chancellor, Prof Varun Sahni later called a meeting of senior professors and administrative staff. On the other hand, staff and teachers of the university are demanding immediate setting up of police post for their safety and suspended their work today to press the demand. In view of the showdown between the students and the university staff, Vice Chancellor Varun Sahni announced closure of the University till establishment of security posts. "We want security for our lives. We are scared of daily students protests and clashes at the complex. Unless we get security, we will not work", University staff Leader Surjit Singh told reporters. |
