| Commandant Bardi may be arrested today | | Zahid Farooq case | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 3: With his counsel hinting withdrawal of petition for anticipatory bail, stage seems all set for arrest of a BSF commandant for his alleged involvement in the murder of a Nishat youth. According to reports, the state and counsel for the deceased youth’s relatives offered stiff resistance to a petition seeking anticipatory bail for BSF Commandant (68 BN) , R K Bardi. The commandant, according to the main accused in Zahid Farooq case, ordered him to shoot Zahid on February 5 near Nishat garden. Ever since Lakhwinder made the statement, the deceased youth’s relatives and Co-ordination Committee Nishat have been seeking Bardi’s arrest. Bardi represented by senior counsel Moulvi Aijaz filed the petition a few days ago in the court of Principal District and Sessions judge Srinagar. The petition was transferred to first additional Sessions Judge, Shakti Gupta for final disposal. The counsel for the slain youth’s relatives, NA Runga while opposing the petition said the commandant was wanted in a case of murder and cannot, therefore, get anticipatory bail. He cited several rulings in support of his argument. The petitioner’s counsel, however, told the court that the commandant was not named in the main charge sheet. He, however, hinted at withdrawing the petition if the charges of murder were proved against his client. The hearing was adjourned. Further arguments will be heard tomorrow afternoon. The state has formed a special team comprising additional Advocate General, Additional Public Prosecutor and Public Prosecutor to resist the petition. Reports said the police were waiting for Bardi in the court to effect his arrest. However, he has not appeared in person in the court till date. The police have reportedly contacted the BSF officials in this regard. A court of enquiry has already been ordered against the commandant. It will be headed by a senior officer of the BSF Zahid, 16, was shot dead by a BSF party on February 5 near Nishat. The killing triggered violent clashes across Kashmir. The Chief Minister ordered a high level probe to be conducted by the divisional commissioner. The report indicting the BSF was submitted within seven days.
