| 148 kg charas, 2100 kg poppy straw seized at Lakhanpur | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 03: Continuing with their special drive against smugglers and tax evaders, sleuths of excise department today seized 148 kilograms of charas worth crores of rupees and 2,100 kilograms of poppy straw from two trucks at Lakhanpur. Official sources said a truck was intercepted and put to physical verification by the excise department sleuths at Lakhanpur toll post while it was on its way from Kashmir to outside the state. During checking, the sleuths recovered some bags concealed beneath apple boxes. Search of the bags led them to the recovery of 148 kg charas and 1,500 kg poppy straw. While the contraband and the truck were seized, the smugglers, including driver, managed to escape. Sources said the truck carried fake registration No JK13A/1934 on it. During the scrutiny of its registration papers, it was found that its original No was JK03A/1934. Over 600 kg poppy straw was seized by the sleuths from another truck bearing registration No RJ13G/5590. Packed in bags, the consignment was hidden underneath PVC pipes. While the truck and the poppy straw were seized, the vehicle occupants fled, the sources added.Sources said the seized contraband and the vehicles were handed over to Inspector Excise, sub-range, Kathua, for action under NDPS Act.Deputy Excise Commissioner Bashir Ahmed Saraf has appreciated the commendable role of the staff and warned smugglers and tax evaders of stern action if they did not desist from such kind of illegal activities. He said foiling six attempts of smugglers in the last one month, the excise department had seized 148 kg charas and 4,000 kg poppy straw at Lakhanpur.
