| Hosts J&K enters pre-quarterfinals of Plus 40 | | 17th J&K Bank Veteran National Table Tennis Championships | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 5: Hosts Jammu and Kashmir today sailed into the pre-quarterfinals of Plus 40 age group on the opening day of the 17th J&K Bank Veteran National Table Tennis Championships, organized by J&K Table Tennis Association at Indoor Complex, MA Stadium, here.
J&K won both of their matches played today. In the first round match, J&K trounced Manipur 3-0. Pankaj Sharma trounced Notan 3-0 while Kapil beat Anil again 3-0. In the third match, Maninder Singh defeated Dinesh in straight sets.
In the second round match, played in the evening session, J&K outplayed Tamil Nadu 3-0. Maninder Singh bt R Chandra 3-0; Pankaj Sharma bt Partha Sarthy 3-0; Satbir Singh bt Purohit 3-0.
Earlier, the five-day long event was declared open by the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, who was chief guest in the inaugural function. Addressing the gathering of players and other prominent people present, he complimented the organizers for taking the initiative of holding the national event in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Sports, R S Chib said, “Efforts are being made to improve the existing sports infrastructure in the state with an aim to host more and more national level events.”
Earlier, in his welcome address, chairman of the organizing committee, Financial Commissioner, Sudhanshu Pandey presented a detailed report of the championships.
Prominent among others present were Advisor to Chief Minister, Devinder Singh Rana.
