| National Tourism Conference on Trans-Himalayan Tourism begins | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 5 : Minister for Tourism & Culture Nawang Rigzin Jora has said that J&K is one of the finest tourist destinations and a Jewel in India's crown, adding that the government is keen to recapture numero uno position that J&K enjoyed for long in the country. He said that revival of tourism industry is essential for sustained development of the state. Jora was speaking at the inaugural function of a 2-day National Tourism Conference on Trans-Himalayan Tourism: Reconciling Development and Conservation", organized by The Business School, of Jammu University in collaboration with Tourism department here today. Minister for Tourism further said that the three regions of the state complement each other and efforts should be made to disperse the tourist visiting either of the regions. He emphasised that domestic tourism is the only way forward for sustainable tourism and therefore the industry should focus on developing this market. Jora further said that the government of Jammu & Kashmir is in the process of encouraging public private partnership model to develop tourism in the state. The 3rd National UGC-SAP Conference, which commences today, is being attended by faculty, research scholars and students of various institutes from across the country in addition to various members from the corporate world, government and other sections of the society. Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu in his address said that we need to focus on cultural sustainability through niche marketing and controlled development to avoid the negative impacts of mass tourism. He also requested the Minister for granting a chair in Tourism studies for Jammu University as well as University of Kashmir. Earlier Dean, Faculty of Management Studies, Jammu University, Prof Ashok Aima in his welcome address presented the key recommendations of SAP-2009 Conference and said that there is a strong need to develop tourism policy with futuristic vision. Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Director, The Business School presented the formal vote of thanks. Dr. Parikshat Singh Manhas, Associate Professor, The Business School conducted the proceedings of the function Prof Kapil Kumar, IGNOU, New Delhi, Prof Sandeep Kulshreshta Director IITTM, Gwalior, Dr RN Pandey, Additional DG, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and Saleem Beg, former DG (Tourism) were the Key Note speakers. Tanveer Jehan, Secretary, Tourism & Culture, J&K Government was the Guest of Honour on the occasion.
