| China opposed to military action against North Korea | | |
Beijing, Oct 12 China today said it was opposed to any military action against its closest ally, North Korea, following Pyongyang 's nuclear test and called for the early resumption of the six-party talks.
"China opposes any military act on the Korean Peninsula," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters.
To bring about denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and oppose nuclear proliferation is the firm and consistent stand of the Chinese Government, he said.
China is North Korea's main aid provider and diplomatic ally. China's stand at the UN Security Council is crucial for any action on North Korea, which announced conducting a nuclear test on October nine.
China had previously rejected one provision in the new U.S. Draft which would authorise international inspections of cargo moving in and out of North Korea to detect arms-related material.
The draft also calls for an arms embargo, a ban on any transfer or development of weapons of mass destruction as well as a ban on luxury goods.
The new U.S. Draft still invokes Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which could ultimately lead to military action, and determines that North Korea's actions are a threat to international peace and security.
China has said it wanted to restrict the reference to Chapter 7 to Article 41, which would authorise only a narrow list of sanctions to ensure no military action could be inferred.
