| Fire destroys heritage building at MRGunj20 shops, 40 godowns gutted | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 5: A devastating fire destroyed 20 shops and 40 godowns in the historic market at Maharaj Gunj (MR Gunj) during the preceding night. The market was the centre of trade in Kashmir during the Dogra rule. According to reports, the flames engulfed the historic building Beopar Mandal Maharaj Gunj around 2.15 hrs during the preceding night. The fire, reports said, started from a wholesale cloth shop, Tirath Ram &Co and engulfed the three-storeyed building in a jiffy. The Fire Service pressed eleven fire engines into service which fought the flames all night. The devastating fire was controlled around 11 am today. The heritage building housed 20 shops in the ground floor and 4o godowns in the first and second floors. The flames consumed the entire building. A fire service official said the fire consumed 3 shops and 4 godowns completely. But, a look at the heritage building narrates a totally different story. The heritage building has gone into ruins. All shops and godowns in the heritage building have been completely destroyed. Police have registered a case. The cause of fire is being ascertained. The heritage building was partially gutted in a fire on November 27, 2007. Thousands of people visited the historic site today and expressed solidarity with the sufferers.
