Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 5: The special investigating team (SIT) had to abandon BSF Commandant’s interrogation in Zahid Farooq’s case today when he complained of irregular blood pressure. Earlier the commandant denied his involvement in the murder of a Nishat teenager.

Answering questions of the special investigating team (SIT), the accused commandant, R K Birdi said he was not involved directly or indirectly in the murder of Zahid. “The accused constable, Lakhwinder Singh, fired the fatal shot on his own”, he said. However, sources said the commandant could not give a satisfactory answer to the SIT.

When asked about Lakhwinder Singh’s confessional statement under section 164 CrPC wherein he has stated that Birdi tried to snatch the rifle from his hands, he said: “It is not true. I did not try to snatch the rifle”, he said.
The commandant complained of irregular blood pressure and was provided the required medicare immediately. Keeping his ailment in view, no further questions were posed to him, the sources said.
Birdi has been kept in Police Station Kothibagh where the SIT officers question him after regular intervals. He will be produced in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Srinagar on Monday when his police remand expires. Same day, the main accused, Lakhwinder Singh will also be produced in the same court.
Meanwhile, the people of Nishat held a demonstration today and demanded severe punishment to the commandant. “Constable Lakhwinder Singh has been made a space goat to save the erring commandant”, they said. .
