| To avoid clash, 12 carriage contractors arrested from FCI office | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 05: Apprehending trouble, police today took into preventive custody at least 12 contractors, who had come to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) head office at Rail Head Complex here for submitting tenders for the transportation of goods. As the FCI carriage contract is highly profitable, several
contractors, including some from Srinagar also, had come with their
supporters to submit tenders in the FCI office. At present, the FCI carriage contract was with a firm jointly run by a NC MLC and Choudhary Nagar alias Nago, who was in the jail in connection with the fudging of evidence in the infamous Amandeep murder case. Police sources said apart from a brother of NC MLC, Nago's brother Shamsher Singh, his another close relative and several other contractors submitted their tenders in the FCI office. Sources said a contractor from Rehari, who enjoyed the backing of another NC MLC, also submitted his tender despite tough resistence by others. Sources said at least a dozen contractors were taken into preventive custody from outside the FCI office after they created nuisance. They were taken to Trikuta Nagar police station from where they were released on bail in the evening. Sources said they were picked up to avoid any kind of clash on the occasion. Sources said the carriage contractors and their supporters were raising their concern over an alleged closed-door meeting of FCI officers with some prominent contractors, who allegedly had the backing of some NC legislators. They objected to the alleged closed-door meeting fearing some kind of deal between them, the sources added. The tenders were scheduled to be opened on Sunday. |
