| 46th annual conference of IES concludes | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 6: 46th annual conference of the Indian econometric society was concluded today Governor NN Vohra, the governor of J&K state and the chancellor of the university of Jammu the chief guest on the occasion congratulated the department and the vice chancellor of University of Jammu for the success of the conference and said that the first document plan was presented by Prof. PC Mahalonabis who is a pioneer in initiating econometric procedures during the earlier years of Indian planning process. He further said that in a country like India where the population and the land is very large with diverse culture living and various climatic conditions any approach towards planning is justified. In our country we have a problem of illiteracy, unemployment in absolute term, 354 million people are below poverty line and hence the economic problems are to be death with quantitative and econometric analysis. He asked the department to organize workshops to make this stream of economic more popular among the students. In his welcome address, Prof. Jasbir Singh, Head, Dept. of Economics and local organizing secretary welcomed the distinguished guests, delegates, members of the civil society, university fraternity to the valedictory function. Two hundred delegates from different parts of the country participated in the 3 day conference. He said that the deliberations during the technical sessions and the interactions during the sessions have proved very beneficial to all especially the students and scholars to look out for a new research area. Prof. R. Radhakrishnna chairman, national statistical commission in his valedictory address highlighted on the debate concerning new poverty line. The poverty line which can be constructed based on calorie intake, income and capabilities. He opined that the measurement of poverty line through the capabilities is difficult as it happens to be an attribute and hence is unmeasurable. The debate has come full circle since the article by VM Dandekar was published in 1970's.Manoj Bhatt, academic coordinator of the conference presented the formal vote of thanks.
