| Finland supports India in tackling terror | | |
Helsinki, Oct 12 Finland, the current Chairman of the European Union (EU), today strongly backed India in its fight against terrorism and supported its inclusion in an expanded UN Security Council but stopped short of openly supporting the Indo-US nuclear deal.
''I would not like Finland to take a position on the nuclear deal reached between India and the United States because we are part of the European Union ,'' Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen said a joint press conference with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after extensive talks between the two leaders on a wide-range of bilateral issues as well as international developments, including counter-terrorism and matters of regional importance.
Finland is a key member of the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which will take up the Indo-US nuclear deal for ratification only after it has been approved by the US Congress.
Mr Vanhanen, however, stated that each nation was free to take decisions in its own national interest in the field of energy.
The Finnish Prime Minister said he had held 'very frutiful´discussions on issues, including counter-terrorism and regional issues, such as Sri Lanka and West Asia.
Dr Singh thanked Finland for expressing solidarity with India in combating terrorism. ''We discussed the need to strengthen international initiatives in combating terrorism. India has been a victim of terrorism. I appreciate the support and solidarity extended by Finland'´, he added.
The Finnish leader said his country fully understood India's concerns on the issue of terrorism. ''We must all fight the scourge of terrorism unitedly,'' he added. |
