| Nationally acclaimed play ‘Holi’ staged | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 6: As many as 24 young artistes of Jammu, many of whom were performing for the first time, today spell bound the audience at Abhinav theatre, here this evening with their theatre skills in the highly acclaimed play “Holi” written by famous playwright of the country, Mahesh Elkunchwar and directed by Mushtaq Kak. The play was staged on the culmination of a month long Theatre Workshop conducted by Mushtaq Kak under the auspices of Himalayan Research and Cultural Foundation. National School of Drama and J&K Academy of Art, Cultural and Languages were co-collaborators in the venture. The play “Holi” is a gory celebration of life. A segment of the present from where the future appears blurred and desolate sees the morrow as a scary apparition and tries to define itself within the confines of a college group. The tragi-comedy envelopes the entire generation of young adults studying courses for which they have no use in their future professions. As an indictment of the situation where life borders on hallucinations, where the path search is peppered with sardonic smiles and deathly indifferent gaze of an older generation which will not budge, ‘Holi’ is an updated diary, which catalogues every happening. It is a story of a confused and choked generation, which finds itself trapped, hurt and angry. The story of the play revolves around a College hostel in which the inmates are angry over the decision of the administration to cancel the holiday for Holi Festival. Through this apparently simple issue, the frustrations and problems being faced by the present directionless young generation are unravelled. The artistes who impressed with their performance included Sandeep Verma, Dipesh Kapoor, Ranjan Saini, Aditya Bhanu, Vikram Kumar and Irfan Choudhary. The play was conceived in the form of an anarchic set that represented the frustrations of the youth. Modern and contemporary devices of dance, music and vigorous movements were the hallmark of the play and the director displayed his innovative directorial vision through this highly accomplished performance. Speaking on the occasion Ravinder Kaul, Secretary of the J&K Chapter of HRCF gave the background of the Foundation and said that the organisation plans to organise several novel and unprecedented events throughout the State, beginning next month. Border areas and neglected far flung areas of the State will be the first priority of our organisation to propagate performing and fine arts in the region, he added.
