An excursion to Gaya, Bodh-Gaya and Nalanda was planned for a group of 30 elderly people of the Ladakh region. The excursion was organized by the ‘TRISHUL DIVISION’ and was flagged off on 22 Sep 06 from Karu, Leh. The aim of this tour was to provide these Buddhist people an insight into the Buddhist culture and customs prevalent in other parts of country so as to broaden their outlook and also to amalgamate them into the national mainstream.
The excursion is being org as part of ‘OP SADBHAVANA’, an initiative by the Army to achieve development of the region. The operation envisages establishment of institutions like `Goodwill Schools’, `ASHA School’ for the physically challenged, ‘Women Empowerment Centre’, ` Adult Literacy Centre’, Motor Driving School’ and `Primary Health Centre’. The excursion is a step in the direction of providing exposure to the elderly of the region so as to achieve integration of the population of the region into the national mainstream.
The excursion group was flagged in on 06 Oct 2006. The visit to these place of reverence was a `dream come true’ experience for the Buddhist people forming get of this excursion. The places included Gaya, where Lord Buddha preached the essence of life, Bodh- Gaya, the place where the Lord attained enlightenment and Nalanda, the famous centre of learning; patronized by the great Buddhist kings.
The excursion group on return expressed deep satisfaction over the conduct of trip. They showed their indebtedness to army for conducting such tour which helped them to know about Buddhist customs and traditions followed in India. The elders were thrilled and expressed their gratitude to army in provided them the opportunity to know various sacred pilgrims place.
