| Fire guts NAC building in Banihal; 4 sustain burns | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 6: A major fire, that broke out in the two-storey Notified Area Committee (NAC) building in Banihal town, about 250 km from here on the Jammu-Srinagar road, late Saturday night, gutted it completely. The building housed five shops, two offices of Srinagar-based newspapers, PDP office, a trust office and a lawyer's chamber, which were also burnt. Estimated loss was put at over Rs 1 cr. Police sources said fire broke in the NAC building, major parts of which were made of timber, at about 11.50 pm or so and soon engulfed the whole structure. Fire tenders from the nearby fire station were pressed into service. Sources said as the news of fire spread, owners of some shops also reached the spot. Raes Ahmad and Javed Ahmad, who are partners in a TV Electronic Shop in the NAC building, sustained burn injuries while attempting to save some articles. Sources said firemen -- Iftikhar Ahmad (driver) and Ghulam Mohammad Tantray (Headconstable) -- also received burns while fighting the flames. All the four were admitted to hospital. Their condition was stated to be out of danger. Sources said apart from electronic shop, fire also engulfed a STD/PCO, a fruit and vegetable shop, a tobacco shop, a barber shop, the chamber of a lawyer, offices of Kashmir-based Srinagar News and Asian Mail newspapers, PDP office and the office of Jateem Trust, burning them completely. Sources said though firemen could not save the building, they prevented the flames from spreading to the nearby structures.Electric short-circuit was stated to be the reason behind the incident. Police had, however, registered a case in this connection and started investigations.
