| Omar happy over Birdi’s arrest | | Teenager’s killing case | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Mar 6: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday expressed his delight over the arrest of an officer of the paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF), who was allegedly responsible for the fatal shooting of a teenager in February. Addressing the media after commissioning a state-of-the-art lake cleaning system at the Dal Lake, Omar Abdullah said, "I'm very happy that you (media) and I share same perspective on the matter. The answer lies in question itself, it has happened after 20 years. I told you, when we (National Conference) came to power whether AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Power Act) will continue to exist or not." "Whether we will use AFSPA to save someone, who has violated law or has used power in a wrong way. We proved with this step that we not only say things, we practice what we say," he added. 68 Battalion BSF Commandant RK Birdi was arrested on Thursday for ordering to fire that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Zahid Farooq. Reportedly, Zahid Farooq became the target when he and his friends, jeered at a BSF convoy that was passing by on the outskirts of Srinagar on February 5. This killing had resulted in prolonged violent protests in the valley region. Initially, BSF constable Lakhvinder Kumar was arrested for firing the shot. Both the Central Government as well as the State Government had ordered a detailed probe to ascertain as to who instructed Lakhvinder to fire at the boy.
