| Smokers penalized for puffing at public places | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 7: There is no dearth of public places filled with smokers puffing their favorite brand of cigarettes through out the day in Jammu and Kashmir but according to the state health department figures ever since complete ban was imposed on smoking at public places only 342 violators have been booked by the agencies empowered by the state health committee to implement the same. The Drug and Food Control organization, nodal agency to implement the ban, has till date collected fine to the tune of Rs 41,000 from several offenders. A sum of Rs 200 is charged as fine from those who violate the ban. According to official sources, "to enforce the ban strictly more than 4700 public places have been inspected and awareness campaign was carried out to educate the common masses about the enforcement of the ban at public places. A state level committee has been constituted to enforce the ban since December 2008. Apart from this district level committees have also been constituted and Deputy Commissioner of the district has been made chairman of the district level committee. To keep everyone on their tenterhooks regular review meetings aimed at monitoring the implementation of the ban in the state have been held.
