EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Mar 8: Minister for Medical and Technical Education, R.S.Chib is likely to visit Delhi to secure Central govt's nod for setting up of 53 ITIs in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the National Conference led Government has decided to secure central sanction for setting up 52 ITIs in Jammu and Kashmir under the Prime Minister's programme for equipping the unemployed youth with technical training. The minister informed that the Government of India has prepared a plan under which one ITI was to be opened for two blocks. In Jammu and Kashmir, there are 91 blocks which would entitle the state to have 45 ITIs but the Minister for Medical and Technical Education, R.S.Chib, has requested the Prime Minister to sanction at least 52 ITIs for the state.
The Minister, however, rubbished allegations that the Government had been responsible for the delay in setting up 18 polytechnics in the state. He said that the Government has identified land in 14 districts and land had to be identified only in the remaining four districts. He said that since in four other districts, including Jammu, there were already polytechnics so no new institute was being set up in these four districts. He said that in several districts, the institutes would be set up on Government land and where the land was not available it was being acquired from private parties.
Referring to the Supreme Court ruling on the admission policy in the two medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir, Chib made it clear that for the interests of students belonging to Jammu and Kashmir, keen to go in for postgraduation in medicines and surgery in colleges outside the state, it was necessary to reserve some seats in the two medical colleges for the outsiders. He said the matter would be discussed by the cabinet and he would favour 10 to 15 per cent reservation for students from outside the state.
Meanwhile, in reply to another question, Chib said that the National Conference led Government was determined to help the youth to gain some skills that could help them in finding gainful employment. In this connection he referred to the central Government's scheme on establishing Skill Development Centres(SDC) in various parts of each state.
