Film festival kicks off at Abhinav theatre

JAMMU, Mar 8: The two day film festival organised by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages kicked off here today. Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, Nasir Aslam Wani formally inaugurated the festival in a simple but impressive function held at Abhinav theatre Jammu. Speaking on the occasion Nasir said that there was no dearth of talent in the state and the films made indigenously attested this in a pronounced manner. "Jammu and Kashmir has got lots of talent. The only thing required is to promote and utilise this talent," Nasir said. Complimenting the Cultural Academy, Nasir said that the Academy deserved appreciation for achieving another milestone through its first solo film festival. Earlier in his address, Secretary Cultural Academy, Zafar Iqbal Manhas said that the film festival was the first solo event of the Academy as far as moving pictures were concerned, and his institution would continue to organise such events in future also. "Through this film festival we have tried to showcase the rich film craft talent of the state," Zafar said. On the inaugural day, the film 'Habba Khatoon', directed by Ayash Arif, on Kashmir's legendary poetess of the same name was screened. In the best category awards Ayash Arif was given best director award for 'Habba Khatoon'. The film also got the best film award. Mushtaq Ali Ahmad Khan was given the second best film award for his film 'Ek Afsana Chaman Ka'. The third best film award was bagged by EMMRC Productions' 'Namda', which was directed by Tariq Abdullah. In acting category Zahoor Zaidi got the best actor award while Luxmi Tagotra bagged the best actress award for 'Phull Bina Dali'. Films including Gurpreet Productions' 'Nunga Rukh', Tasweer Motion Pictures' 'Tresh Te Tarpan', Arooj Productions' 'The Lost Child Hood', Kingdom Comm-unications' 'Dastan' and DK Films' 'Saza Begunahi Ki' were awarded consolation prizes. The festival that began today would culminate tomorrow. On the occasion, Minister gave away prestigious Academy Film Awards to renowned filmmakers and actors of the state. Additional Secretary, Culture Academy, Savita Bakshi, and Additional Secretary, Central, Shamima Akhtar were also present on the occasion.
