10/12/2006 7:55:39 PM
Jammu, Oct 12: Social Welfare Chareel Banihal, a non-government organisation, has alleged that the blasting for digging 11 kms long railway tunnel in the upper reaches of Banihal segment was damaging the residential houses within the vicinity as well as endangering life of the inhabitants in the area.
Addressing a press conference, here today, Kesear Hamid, chairman SWCB said that the blasting has seriously damaged the property of the people and it is endangering the lives of the people. Demanding immediate action in this regard, he said that in the meantime the blasting work should be kept under suspension.
“Laying down Railway Track from Banihal segment was by and large welcomed by the inhabitants of the area”, he said adding, “During the survey followed by construction work by M/s IRCON international and Northern Railway it is well known that IRCON has acquired the expertise to influence police/administration to suppress the people wherever it is allotted a contract”.
Claiming that IRCON and Northern Railway had promised adequate compensation beside employment gurantee to the local residents against the land acquisition, Kesar alleged that the promise was never fullfileld and instead the authorities unleashed a reign of terror so as to suppress the demands of the local residents.
“Now blasting for digging 11 kms long tunnel (longest in Aisa) was damaging the residential houses within the vicinity as well as endangering life of the inhabitants”, he said demanding that the people living in the endangered area and their live stock be rehabilitated to safer places after providing them suitable alternative residential accommodation or with peace of land and financial assistance to rebuilt their houses.
