| Vaishnodevi shrine not on terror radar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 8: Even as the central minister of state for home, Mullappally Ramachandran told the parliament on March 2 last that the holy cave shrine of Vaishno Devi was on terror radar, IGP, Jammu zone, Dr
Ashok Gupta today sought to "play down" such reports, ruling out "any recent specific inputs" in this regard.
In a written reply in the parliament, Ramachandran had stated that the world famous Vaishno Devi shrine was one of the targets on the radar of terrorists.
The minister also said that central security agencies had furnished inputs based on intelligence inputs to that effect. He, however, had asserted that it was not in public interest to disclose those facts.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had even sent advisories to the state government to prepare an appropriate security plan to secure and protect the religious shrine.
Playing down what Ramachandran told the House on March 2, the IGP ruled out "any recent specific inputs" concerning the threat to the holy cave shrine.
"Threats have always remained to the holy shrine. As such, we do not have any recent specific input," he told reporters here. "Let me make a request. It is a sensitive issue, which was perhaps blown out of proportion," Gupta added. "But that does not mean having said so we will or we are planning to lower guards. Absolutely not," he said, claiming that a series of meetings were held to further strengthen the security of the shrine. |
