| Bonded labour exists in JK, peon gets Rs 125 | | | ET REPORT JAMMU, Mar 9: Bonded labour may have ended in rest of the world but it is still in vogue in Kashmir. A villager who has been working in the education department as peon for the past 22 years gets a monthly salary of Rs 125. The peon, Ghulam Muhammad Ganie son of Abdul Gani resident of Kanloo Pattan staged a dharna at Press Enclave at Residency road Srinagar today and narrated his woeful tale. Ghulam Muhammad's father worked in the education department. Twenty-two years ago he died. He was given temporary employment by the department at a monthly remuneration of RS 25. He has been serving the middle school at Kanloo, Pattan for all these years. For 19 years, he got Rs 25 every month. However, the `generous' department enhanced his `pay' three years ago. Now he gets Rs 125. Surprisingly the department ignored him and did not recommend him for permanent employment during Ghulam Nabi Azad's regime. Azad, it may be mentioned, had asked the government departments to submit a list of temporary employees for regularization. Ghulam Muhammad got some relief for six months when the school authorities gave him additional Rs 500 for cooking food for the students. However, the after six months, the payment was stopped without assigning any reason. Ghulam Muhammad has two daughters and both of them are getting married shortly. "How can I manage it?" Tears that rolled down his wrinkled cheeks attracted attention from the media persons for some time. But as they left to discharge their professional duties, he was left alone. But then came a photojournalist. Ghulam Muhammad expected help but he had come to take a photo!
