| All work and no visitor in TC's office | | | CHAMANKAUL EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 9: The transport commissioner's office is different from rest of the offices in the state. The staffers work and work very hard to ensure smooth and effective functioning of the office. However, notwithstanding these measures heaps of files lying scattered everywhere narrate a different story. The aggrieved transporters also have many tales to tell. To mention the least, the transport department has been running in loss since it came into being. The office being associated with darbaar attracts transporters from all parts of the state for redressal of their grievances. The transporters, therefore, should have free access to the office to cope up with the rush, suggested a transporter, adding "Limited visiting hours had rendered the office almost infructious." A dejected transport, Arun Sudan narrated his woeful tale to Early Times. "I have been coming to this office for the past eight days to submit a draft to get my permit transferred. I was told that the concerned clerk had gone on leave. Today when I saw him and rushed to the office with my draft but the security men restrained me from entering the office. I was told to come between 3 p.m to 5 p.m when the office entertains visitors. This means I have to stay back in Jammu tonight. It involves a lot of money." Transport Commissioner, SM Faizullah said that the timing for visitors had been set five years ago by the then Commissioner. "As the department is over burdened, employees need time to clear the pending files", he said. Assuring review of the existing time schedule, he said the department was committed to serve the people better. The concerned minister Qamar Ali Akhoon said the powers of Transport Commissioner had been decentralized for the convenience of transporters. Deputy Transport Commissioner would take care of Jammu region, while as Joint Transport Commissioner Kashmir will look after the affairs in valley. Similarly District Development Commissioner Ladakh will cater to the needs of local transporters. "The time schedule is being looked into and a new strategy is expected shortly", he said.
