| Blinds demand withdrawal of SRO 62 | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 10: Accusing the State Government of failing to resolve the issues of blinds, National Federation of the Blind today reiterated its demand of withdrawal of SRO 62 which, it alleged, debars the blind community from getting appointed in the education department. Scores of blinds from different parts of the Jammu assembled outside the office of Divisional Commissioner Jammu and shouted slogans against the state government. The protestors said that one percent reservation quota of the blind as enshrined in the Jammu and Kashmir State Handicapped Act VI and Central Act was withdrawn by the State Cabinet through SRO 62. "Since then not a single blind candidate's application was entertained by State Service Recruitment Board (SSRB) and the quota of one per cent was misused by the Government to please some vested interested persons," they alleged. Ram Dass Dubey, general secretary of the federation demanded that one per cent reservation quota for blind people should be revived and consider them as state subjects at par with other people of the State. He alleged that the blind people have been facing many hardships at the hands of the Government. "We had approached various ministers, MLAs and MLCs for withdrawal of the SRO 62 but of no avail. We are compelled to take to the streets and fight for our fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution of India," he said. He warned that if the Government did not withdraw this "draconian law", the blind community would intensify their agitation in days to come.
