| PUCL convener opposes PRDB | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 11: Noted columnist and convener Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) Jammu Kashmir State, has strongly opposed the Permanent Resident (Disqualification) Bill (PRDB) introduced in the assembly. The bill seeks to disqualify women from their status as permanent residents of the state if they opt to marry a non-state subject. Puri said the proposed bill violates the principle of gender equality, guaranteed by the constitution of the state and universally accepted covenants. The bill, he added, does not apply to men who are free to marry outsiders. "It is discriminatory as it proposes to withdraw the permanent resident status of a women, to which she is otherwise entitled by marrying a citizen of the state." in case of break up of her marriage."It is ironical that such a bill has been introduced at a time when womens' day was just celebrated the world over and when Rajya Sabha has passed the historic bill seeking 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures", he said.
