First Lady highlights role of civil society, NGOs’ in generating awareness

JAMMU, Mar 11: The First Lady, Usha Vohra, has said that civil society groups and NGOs have to play a significant role in generating awareness to achieve the objective of gender equality and women empowerment.
The First Lady, as Chief Guest, was addressing the inaugural session of the daylong seminar on “Developing Leadership among Women: Issues and Strategies”, at the Model Institute of Education and Research (MIER), here today.
Vohra observed that though education is a pre-condition to women empowerment but it alone cannot guarantee this, adding that significant partnerships have to be hosted with the civil society groups, NGOs and the private sector in support of different aspects of gender equality and female empowerment.
She stressed that ensuring ample opportunities in economic decision making is imperative for their empowerment.
The First Lady referred to the extensive provisions in the chapters on Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles of State Policy and other provisions enshrined in the Constitution of India which prescribe the provision of the required opportunities for establishing an egalitarian society in which both men and women share equal rights.
She added that alongside the constitutional and legal provisions there is need for bringing about change in the mindset to achieve the desired results.
While referring to the passing of the Bill recently by the Rajya Sabha for providing 33 percent reservation to women, the First Lady gave an over view and status in regard to women empowerment in the country and worldwide.
The First Lady released a book brought out by the Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies, giving details of 15 women achievers of the State. She also presented mementos to a number of prominent women on the occasion.
They included Dr. Ved Kumari Ghai, Shanta Bharti, Prof. Rita Jatendra, Dr. R. Madan, Vijay Kotwal, Dr. Kum Kum Sharma, Dr. Mumtaz Goni, Rani Gargi Blowria, Dr. Poonam Dhawan, Seema Khajooria Shekhar and Dr. Meenakshi Kilam.
The Director, Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies, Dr. Renu Gupta presented a review of the book released by the First Lady on the occasion.
The Director, Women Study Centre, Jammu University, Dr. Poonam Dhawan, said that there is need for women to become self-reliant. She said that they have to come out with full confidence and perform with their utmost capacity for the good of the society. In his welcome address, the Chairperson, MIER, Dr. Arun K. Gupta, threw light on the aims and objectives of organizing the seminar and the functioning of the Centre for Women Studies.
