| Police denies CRPF accusations of inaction against stone pelters | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 11: Rubbis-hing the allegations by CRPF against police authorities for inaction against stone-pelters in valley, senior police functionaries have been enraged by the reports on the CRPF allegations that the state police has remained passive spectator to the growing incidents of stone pelting against the police. The CRPF authorities have, according to reports, conveyed in writing to the state Government their displeasure over the lack of action against those found involved in stone pelting in Kashmir during the last several months. Reports said at one stage senior CRPF officials met the Governor, N.N.Vohra and requested him to look into the matter. The CRPF officials claimed that in the stone pelting incidents in 2009, over 1,000 security personnel were injured. Senior police functionaries, while refuting the allegations, said that in 2009 as many as 278 incidents of stone pelting had been recorded in kashmir in which 493 miscreants were arrested and 5,666 were detained. According to the police, in January and February 2010, 419 people had been arrested in 94 incidents. It said it was for the first time that under the Public Safety Act (PSA),which provides for detention for two years without trial, 25 people were detained. Police said that not only those who were involved in stone pelting but those who were aiding and inciting youths to indulge in stone pelting had been arrested. The police felt peeved that the CRPF had earlier blamed the police for inaction against the stone pelters and later claimed credit for having motivated the state police to take action against the miscreants. The CRPF functionar ies had stated that the police swung into action only after the CRPF complained of the police inaction. The police officer explained that without proper scrutiny "we cannot initiate action against any one. The police explained that during recent protest rallies, the security forces had to be very careful lest there should be any incident of human rights violation which could have triggered fierce protests.
