| Boycott municipal elections: Geelani | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 12: Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani today called for boycott of municipal elections while addressing a massive gathering at Sopore today.Geelani, according to reports, visited Chinkipora, Sopore today where17 houses were destroyed during an encounter between militants and the troops recently. Geelani distributed RS 5lakh and 60 quintals of rice among the sufferers. Soon after, Geelani addressed a massive gathering and called for boycott of municipal elections. "It is a futile exercise and serves no purpose. Jammu Kashmir is not a part of India and, therefore, there is no need of going for elections", he said. Elections are held to provide grist for running the Indian propaganda mill, he said. "We are no against the people of India. Whichever faith they profess, they are our brothers and we wish them good luck. But elections in Jammu Kashmir are used as a tool to fool the outside world. Little do the gullible people of India know that by denying the rights to the people of Jammu Kashmir, India has badly tarnished its image at the international level", he said. Terming the compensation of RS one lakh per family as rubbing salt into the wounds of sufferers, Geelani said the government is under a legal and moral obligation to ensure total rehabilitation of the sufferers. Urging the youth to refrain from stone pelting, Geelani warned the police to refrain from using force on peaceful protesters.
