| Mir for decentralizing fertilizer distribution at Kissan Mela in Bashat | | | Sarita Jamwal EARLY TIMES REPORT Udhampur, Mar 12: To check the instances of erratic supply and short fall of fertilizers in remote and for flung productive areas of Jammu and Kashmir, the government has hoarped upon a strategy for decentralizing and stream, lining of fertilizing distribution. Apprising about the policy shift to improve and make available fertilizers to the farming community as per their needs , the Minister for Agriculture, Mr Ghulam Hassan Mir, today said that under new mechanism, Chief Agriculture Officer has been authorized to issue fertilizer distribution licences to the applicant, while criteria for seeking the licence too has been liberalized. Mr. Mir after inaugurating Kissan Mela at Bashat in Chenani tehsil of district Udhampur said that any educative applicant of the village could now apply directly to the chief agriculture Officer for obtaining fertilizer distribution licences. He said such a mechanism would insure the distribution of desired composition fertilizers on fixed rates near the localities of the farmers. Minister of State for Agriculture, Javed Ahmed Dar, Vice Chairman, Advisory Board for Development of Kissan, Mr. Rashpal Singh, MLA Chenani, K. C. Bhagat, Distirct Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Baseer Ahmed Khan, Director Agriculture, Jammu Ajay Khajuria, SSP, Udhampur, Surinder Gupta, Chief Agriculture Officer, Udhampur ,Kuldesh Sharma, officer of various departments and large number of farmers were present on the occasion. Describing the farmers as back bone of the economy, the Minister said that being a predominantly agricultural dependent state, the prospers fortune lies in the enlightened and technically empowered farming techniques . He said that the increasing productive out put from the cultivable area is the only remedy to be self reliant. Retreating the commitment of the collation government for providing better facilities to the farming community, the Minister said that special focus is being laid on to increase the productivity by insuring timely distribution of quality seeds and other modern equipments to the farmers. He also called upon the farmers to have regular interactions with the officers of agriculture department for the information of latest agricultural trends for high yield. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of State for Agriculture complimented the farmers for having farmer friendly budget. He said that all out efforts are being made to provide necessary facilities to the farmers for increasing vegetable production under Area Expansion programme. Vice Chairman, Advisory Board for Development of Kissan said that he would conduct an extensive touring of Chenani tehsil to take stock of farmers problem and same would be submitted to the Minister for Agriculture for redressal. MLA, Chenani while speaking on the occasion demanded vegetable Mandi at Bashat to provide marketing facility to the growers. Terming the Bashat area of Chenani tehsil as Vegetable Bowel of Jammu province, the Director Agriculture in his welcome address said that vegetable production of this area was not only marketed to Udhampur but also to Jammu, Srinagar and Punjab state. He apprised that out of 4200 Hect. Cultivated area in the province, 5500 Hect. Vegetables area exists in Chenani tehsil only with a production of 3200 metric tonnes of vegetables annually. He also mentioned various initiatives of the Agriculture department to meet out the farmers requirements. Later, the Minister also distributed the prizes among the farmers on their best vegetable produce samples.
