| Anantnag MP's plea to Centre to compensate J&K in lieu of Indus Water Treaty | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, MAR 12: On a day when J&K Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather has expressed the wish in his Budget for the State for generous Central grant for progress and development, his party colleague and Anantnag MP Mirza Mehboob Beg sought the State to be compensated by the Centre for the losses it suffered due to the Indus Water Treaty signed with Pakistan nearly half-a-century ago. Speaking during the discussion on Union Budget in Lok Sabha on Friday, Beg said that the State suffered heavily since 1960 due to the treaty as it gave Pakistan exclusive rights to use water from three Western rivers or the Indus, the Jhelum and the Chenab. All of them flow from Jammu and Kashmir whereas India has similar rights to use water from three Eastern rivers or the Sutlej, the Beas and the Ravi. "God was kind to Jammu and Kashmir, bestowing it with tremendous water resources. But in 1960, all waters of Jammu and Kashmir were handed over to Pakistan. The State was left with no control over its own water," Beg lamented, adding that he also knew that the treaty could now not be scrapped. And thus his plea was "I would request the Centre to compensate Jammu and Kashmir for the losses due to the Indus Water Treaty." Beg reminded of the immense tourism potential that the State has been endowed with and urged the Government to provide enough funds to build infrastructure and facilities throughout the State to attract more tourists both foreign and domestic. He added that efforts made thus far in this regard remain inadequate.
