| Jammu scientists visit village Khanpur | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 13: A Team of Scientist of Sher-e- Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu Village Khanpur of Barnoti Block Distl-Kathua on 12th March 2010 under the visionary approach ofHon'ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. B. Mishra. The team of Scientists Comprising of Dr. Arshad Mahmood, Dr. Amresh Vaid, Dr. Sandeep Chopra, Dr. Tuhina Day, Dr. Monika Sood, Dr, Barejesh Ajrawat, Dr. Kafil Hussain and Dr. B. Srivastava interacted with the farmers and visited the fields and provided on the spot remedical measures. All the outset, Dr. Arshad Mahmood, coordinator of the team apprised the farmers about the purpose and need of such programmes initiated by SKUAST-J. In the meeting farmers raised issues with regard to shortage of irrigation water, diseases in crops and vegetables, non-availability of Hvy seeds and fertilizers at proper time, marketing of produces and animal diseases. Dr. Amresh Vaid discussed regarding the diseases in the wheat and rice crops and farmers were also advised for cultivation of pulse crops. Dr. Tuhina advised farmers regarding the use of Rust Resistance wheat varieties like PBW 550 and DBW17 replacing the traditional varieties like PBW502 and also advised the farmers regarding shift to alternative cropping system to overcome the scarcity of water. Dr. Sandeep Chopra suggested seed treatment and management of vegetables specially Okra and Cucurbits before sowing. Dr. Kafil Hussain and Dr. B. Srivastava discussed the various issues related to animal health, Dr. Brajesh Ajrawat provided expert advised to the farmers on their fields of specialization. Dr. Arshad Mahmood advised the farmers, to frame cooperatives societies for Keeping at bay the middlemen who take away a sizeable chunk of their farm profits.
