Shopian on boil again

Jammu, Mar 13: Police resorted to cane charge and lobbed scores of tearsmoke shells to disperse angry demonstrators protesting arrest of a relative of two women allegedly raped and murdered in May last year. The demonstrators attacked police station and the district magistrate's office. The demonstrations left several persons wounded.
According to reports, Shakeel Ahmad brother of Aasiya and husband of Neelofar-two women who were raped and subsequently murdered last year was taken into custody by the police today for unknown reasons.
Reports said Shakeel, a local businessman was dragged from his shop and beaten to pulp by the police after he exchanged heated arguments with the police over a trivial issue. The police, reports said, took him into custody soon after. The news of his arrest evoked severe reaction in the town. People came out in large numbers and chanted slogans against the police.
The angry demonstrators pelted stones on the government vehicles and buildings, reports said. The police responded by smoke shells and cane charge. However, reports said, the angry demonstrators marched towards deputy commissioner's office and subjected it to heavy stone pelting. Police station Shopian was also attached. The authorities rushed reinforcements to disperse the people.
Later, the Majlis-e-Mushawarat held an emergency meeting and marched to the police station. After deliberating with the police for quite some time, the Majlis members secured Shakeel's release. However, the police say Shakeel was enlarged on bail.
Majlis-e-Mushawarat is a body formed by the local people and its super heads the campaign for justice for Aasiya and Neelofar's relatives.
Immediately after his release, Shakeel was rushed to a Srinagar hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be critical. The Majlis has called for Shopian bandh tomorrow (March 14).
