| ‘No question to support PRC issue’ | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 13: With the PDP seemingly going whole hog to woo the ruling coalition partners in support of the Permanent Resident (Disqualification) Certificate Bill, Congress today sought to dissociate itself from the controversial issue. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar held at Gandhi Nagar Women College here Saturday, PCC president Saifudin Soz ruled out any support to the bill seeking cancellation of permanent resident rights of domicile women marrying outside Jammu and Kashmir, saying it was not on party agenda. He said the Permanent Resident (Disqualification) Certificate bill, introduced by PDP in the legislative council, "is not on Congress agenda and there is no question to support it". "How can we support a private member's bill of another party when we are in coalition with the National Conference?" he asked. The PCC president said women's rights had to be acknowledged and promoted for the well-being of the society. The passage of the women's reservation bill in Rajya Sabha was a good beginning in this direction, he added. Describing it as "a bitter pill for men to digest", he told the seminar that "passing of the bill has conveyed a strong signal to the whole country that men will have to be ready for sacrifices and make space for women." |
