| Women’s Reservation Bill a ‘beacon for women emancipation’: Soz | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 13: Aimed at increasing participation of women at each level of legislative decision-making, starting from the Lok Sabha down to state and local legislatures, the Women's Reservation Bill has again become the focus of attention after an exile of 14 years.
The proposed legislation to reserve 33.3 per cent seats in parliament and state legislatures for women was first drafted by the United Front government headed by HD Deve Gowda 14 years back.
Terming the passage of the bill by the present UPA government at the Centre as a revolutionary step to end the gender bias, PCC president and former union minister Saifudin Soz today said it would be beacon for women.
The bill would go a long way to change the state of women in India, he said and added that the Congress was committed to provide equality of status to women. Speaking at a seminar on Women Awareness at Gandhi Nagar Women College here, the PCC president said the UPA Government, led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was making tireless efforts to uplift the status of women in the society. He said the bill had become the focus of attention in the country as it was going to be a revolutionary step to put an end to the gender bias and discrimination. He said due to the passage of the bill, the long cherished dreams and aspirations of the womenfolk had been fulfilled. All visionary personalities wished India to prosper and progress with full participation of all people, including Women, irrespective of caste, creed, colour, religion and sex in the government, public and private sectors, he added. He said the bill was passed because of the endeavours of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the prime minister to offer an opportunity to the vast chunk of women to participate in the parliamentary democracy. Prof Soz said as women's number was almost 50 per cent of the total population in the country, their participation in the democratic set up right from the village panchayats to the parliament could contribute in a significant way to push the country forward on way to progress and prosperity in the new millennium where women would work along with men to see revolutionary changes in the Indian society. Revenue minister Raman Bhalla, who was also present on the occasion, said women were playing a vital role in the society. He lauded the UPA decision of providing reservation to women. He said the women like Sonia Gandhi, Pratibha Patil and Meira Kumar were contributing equally in the nation building. Medical and technical education minister RS Chib, Mahila Congress president and MLA Indu Pawar, Scheduled Caste Advisory Board vice-chairperson Swaran Lata, Mangat Ram Sharma, Prem Sagar Aziz and Mula Ram also attended the function. On the occasion, artists from Delhi, Chandigarh and Patiala presented colourful cultural programmes which were highly appreciated by the audience.
